28 orbits around the sun

  • Apr. 13th, 2009 at 5:09 PM

I celebrated yet another birthday…………. Third consecutive birthday away from home and most probably I have finished one third of my life. I was reflecting upon on how the world and my motherland Sri Lanka has shaped since I was born.

There are my incidents which struck my mind. The tsunami accounted for 30000 lives in Sri Lanka. And we have not experienced such a major disaster for centuries. We thought we don’t have any natural disasters but the Tsunami changed it.

How can I forget the historic moment where we won the Cricket world cup in 1996? It was a revolution for Sri Lankan cricket. I remember pre-96 most of the world cup records were against SL. Lowest score was by SL ad the highest score was against us. But after 96 most of the world cup records belong to SL team. What a difference. Malinga’s 4 wickets in four balls in the previous world cup, highest test score and Muralis being the highest wicket taker were memorable moments for SL cricket.

I have witnessed rise and fall of LTTE the ruthless terrorist organization. Sri Lanka is on the verge of achieving long lasing peace.

On the world arena there were few incidents which almost shaped modern history. September 11th was an unprecedented event. When I switched on to the TV the second plane has just struck. I was thinking CNN must be joking.

Perhaps the economic recession and the rise of China will have similar economic effects that happened after WW2 changing the economic power balance.

Last two decades were shaped by technology. Mobile and internet revolution changed every thing from the way people buy to the way people maintain relationships. There are few giants who helped to achieve this status Google, Microsoft and Apple is only a few.

Let’s see what happens next…………

Managing assignments

  • Oct. 21st, 2008 at 12:06 AM
Again I am closing to an end of another semester. Efffectively this is my 9th semester............ Dont get confused. I counted my seven semesters at Moratuwa where I did my undergrads and this is my 2nd sem at ANU. People say practice makes perfect. But still I have to perfect the art of managing assignments. This sem was so crazy one assignment after another. Tomorrow I have two presentations and Thusday another one. Then Friday another assignment due for 2000 words. And can I relax the weekend. No way last assignment due on Monday.

There are few golden rules in managing assignments. start early. Plan and start writing. .....draft..... then review. and try work with a collegue. I practice some but not all simultaneously. Perhaps better luck next time.

Motivation

  • Sep. 17th, 2008 at 10:19 PM
There are so many theories about motivation. and so many definitions. One definition I liked was "unsatisfied need which directs an individual or a group of individuals to achieve a particular objective". One characteristic of motivation is the persistence. Persistence describes how long an individual can maintain his (and obviously her. I am not a Chauvinist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) interest until the objective was achieved.

From the beginning of this semester my motivation to study was very low.  I just attended the lectures. But suddenly after 8 weeks (of fourteen week semester) my motivation increased. Still I am thinking of the reason.

I hope I will have persistence for next seven weeks.................. Then its summertime.

Quotes at ANU

  • Aug. 25th, 2008 at 8:53 PM
While during my stay at Australian National University I met a lot of interesting people from all over the world. Most of them are very friendly and more than that they are creative. I just thought of recording interesting quotes. Just for fun and as a tribute for the original author.......

After the the first semester one of my friend commented,

"Everything I learned in this semester was rubbish...................." who was originally from a scientific background after learning management subjects for the first time in his life. Being from an engineering background I find some management theories are too simple and common sense where even a Montessori kid can understand. And I am learning them at my masters level :-). So it is no wonder that my friend found that as rubbish. I would rank this quotation as the quote during my stay.

While watching Olympics closing ceremony we were amazed by the sophisticated fireworks. It was one of the best project management examples. When the fireworks started we were saying "Wow......" to ourselves simply being surprised by the volume. Suddenly one Chinese friend goes on,

"Those are missiles aimed at Taiwan..............". He was just sarcastic. I am sure he did not mean anything bad and his comment was so spontaneous for the occasion.

If you find any interesting comments please log them as comments and do please keep the anonimity of the original author.

The area I lived in at Maharagama was supposed to be quite residential. We had the convenience of easy access to the town but there were only households and not businesses nearby. Things got changed after an unauthorized international school started operations few blocks away from my place.

This institute  known as "Millennium Academical Institute- Maharagama " is not having any permission to have an international school in its location. How can you have an international school where you have only few square meters of land!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Children needs more space for their mental development.

Look at the photographs of the buildings which is not having any aesthetic value suitable for a school. God bless the poor children studying there............... The road has been ruined by the heavy influx of vehicles before the school time.

Karna in Mahabarat

  • Aug. 3rd, 2007 at 12:07 PM
My favorite epic character. ............. There are few things in common for my favorite characters in all the three famous epics.

Karna in Mahabarata
Indrajith in Ramayana and
Hector in Iliad

All died in the war. They fought for a war for which they were not directly responsible and they fought on behalf of the others.

Karna fought because of his friend Duryodhan. Just because of friendship knowing that he is fighting against his own brothers.
Indrajith fought for his father and the country. Hector fought for his brother and the country.

Among those three I believe Karna is the best. Because he had to fight with his own brothers on behalf of friendship. More than that he was offered the throne (by his opposition) for which both sides fought for. But he did not betray his friend.

Policies

  • Aug. 3rd, 2007 at 11:44 AM
Breaking a policy................. Is it ethically wrong to break a policy.  I believe its alright to break a policy when the policy itself becomes a barrier to to the ultimate goal you are seeking.

Thats what happened to "Beeshma" in mahabarat. He gave three vows for the betterment of the country. But the vow itself became a hindrance for the well being of the country but he refused to break the policy because he had made vows. So the policy is just a mechanism taken to ensure that the ultimate objective is achieved.

What is more important is the mission rather than the policy. Even organizations should break the existing policies when they change. When they try to achieve the mission.

In that sense Mahabarat is a managemnt phylosophy book which teaches what is more important is the mission rather than not breaking policies.

Counting days................

  • May. 31st, 2007 at 3:52 PM

Six month marathon is almost over. Now  am packing my clothes to go back home. It was the worst of times and best of times. This is the first time I stayed away from home more than a week. It was a time I lost the luxury of having a home cooked meal or my mother serving the bed tea next to my bed. Staying away from home was a novel experience for me. Cooking my own was really hard for me in the begining. But Iearnt it quite fast.

Life in NJ was quite fun. Especially when you are so close to New York. I travelled a lot although out of six months, thee months could not see proper sunlight. Just exaggerating......... Many say this time the winter was good. I enjoyed the washington trip I went alone a lot coz it gave me the opportunity to learn a lot. I walked though the entire "airospace" histry by spending a whole day at Smithsonians.

Work at US. We always talk about work. So lets not talk about it. Why should I bore my self.

Missing home.............. Yes thats something I experienced. But technology has made human lives closer. If you have a internet connection and a webcam you are closer to home. Thanks a lot to Skype.

Next Tuesday I will be back in my family and in my nice little house. But I will be able to cherish the memories in US for years in my life.

Could not make a Wesak lantern this time

  • May. 7th, 2007 at 3:58 PM

Since I was a kid I used to make a Wesak Lantern irrespective of the conditions. Exams, Sick, Uni assignment deadlines, what ever schedules at workplace I used to make a lantern. But this time I could not coz I was out of Sri Lanka. I believe making a wesak lantern on your own (rather than buy one as most Sri Lankans do) is a good way to relax your mind.

I remember on those uni days I never failed to make a lantern irrespective of the exams. All the four years we had semester exams on May and December. May was more stressful for me coz I had cima exams also in May.

Rather than studying for about two days I focused on assembling a lantern rather than cramming books. It helped me to relax and think fresh in exam days.

Have a look at the lantern I made for Wesak two years back.......Quite complex in geometry. Trust me I used Microsoft Visio and trigonometry knowledge in designing this one.

Are we there yet...........

Cricket is a funny game and Sri Lanka is a lucky team.

When Sri Lanka won against Bangladesh by a huge margin Indians were thrilled more than Sri Lankans. In the next match against India next Friday surely Bangladeshis will cheer Sri Lanka up. Out of India and Bangladesh, which team gets the next ticket to home depends on how Sri Lanka plays against India.

With today’s thumping victory over Bangladesh has Sri Lanka secured a place in super 8???????????Almost yes. But not certainly. If Lions loose to India by a margin of 250 runs and Bangladesh wins the Bermuda match by another 250 SL will be out. But likelihood of such an outcome will be minimal unless it’s a major match fixing.
Look at the following tree diagram. Cricket ground is a laboratory where experimental probabilities fail miserably. But its worth knowing the permutations. Anything can happen on a cricket pitch……………

Indians will have to win the match against Lankans. Even a draw would send them home. As Indian NRR is far better than Bangladesh, a simple win against Sri Lanka will secure a super 8 position for India.

Today’s Jayawardana’s teams victory sends a strong signal, that Indians are having an uphill task.
Every body was having positive hopes about the new millennium. Specially with the advances of science technology people expected world would be revolutionized. In real sense millennium is a revolution. But humanity faced its greatest crisis in terms of natural disasters like tsunami as well as man made disasters like in September 11th in the Millennium.

In the light of this His Holiness Dalai Lamas "Ethics for the new Millennium" provides an insight on how to face challenges faced by humanity through spirituality.

How I came to know came to know about the book is a pretty interesting story. While I was traveling in the train, I had a chat with a Russian whom I just met. Knowing I am a buddhist he recommended me the book "Ethics for the New Millennium". I dont think he is a Buddhist but perhaps he is interested in reading. Thanks mate for recommending me a great book.

By the way book is not about Buddhism but surely Dalai Lama should have inspired by Buddhist philosophy. According to him, the spirituality and the sense of right and wrong is common to every major religion. What differs from religion to religion is rituals, prayers and the ultimate goal you are seeking.

The book is quite rich in content in explaining about the getting inner peace in mind. Further it was very inspiring to read about being happy in this materialistic world.

Trip to Washington - Part One

  • Feb. 27th, 2007 at 3:41 PM
As long weekends are rare, and to make the maximum use of it I thought of going some where rather than browsing web staying in my apartment.
Where to go........ As my experiences in travelling US is limited I thought of going to Washington which I thought I can manage going alone without much of a trouble.

Finding train stops and travel was still bit confusing for me as I have been in US for just two months. So I started doing my homework and thanks to Google maps (maps.Google.com) it was not much of a trouble locating places.

I booked a bus going from New York to Washington to New York and it was only $35. Iit was extremly cheap compared to traveling by train Amtrack. On Saturday February 17th 2007 I got up and took the path train to world trade centre. Ah forgot to tell you I am staying in Jersey City which is in New Jersey but very much closer to New York.

I had the printout taken from the map but cant go though the hassle of finding directions so thought of taking a cab. Cab Driver exactly new the place where the bus pick up location for without much of a problem I boarded.

Journey to Washington was around 5 Hours and I started sight seeing on the way as I was pretty new to the country. There is nothing much to look on the way but for a first timer its an enjoyable visit. Alas........ I forgot to buy anything to eat on the way thinking that bus will stop somewhere for snacks. But it did not. Around 1:00 p.m bus arrived at Washington.

I will continue about my experience from my next blog.

Serendipity

  • Feb. 6th, 2007 at 3:48 AM
While wandering over the web I noticed word "Serendipity" was one of the most looked after word in Cambridge dictionary.

You can find more info by following this ink.
http://www.fun-with-words.com/word_records.html

Serendipity means finding something valuable or precious while you are not searching for it. Simply when you find some thing really valuable by accident we call it "Serendipitous". Some of the worlds most famous discoveries are Serendipitous.
Even the discovery of American Continent was "Serendipitous" as Colombus was actually looking for India.

According to American Heritage Dictionary the word roots are from Persian. Persians called Sri Lanka as Serendip. Perhaps in the ancient days Persians might have landed to Sri Lanka by accident and have discovered the prosperous island of beauty. They named the island "Serendib"

This is something all Sri Lankans can be proud of................ We are living on a land of Serendipity.

Aliens - My Belief

  • Aug. 18th, 2006 at 10:58 PM
People are having various perceptions about Aliens. Some believe aliens do exist. Some say we humans are the only intelligent species on this universe.

When we think of the infinite universe anything can happen. There are millions of galaxies one having intelligent life forms in one of those is not a miracle.

Some believe aliens even visit our planet. One of the counter arguments used against the visit of aliens is the time needed to travel from one galaxy. According to the technology the humans have it will take eons to reach Andromeda our nearest galaxy. We think in that way since rocket propulsion is the fastest way of travel we know about.

Can there be better technologies? Assume you have a robot. According to Einstein's famous e= mc ^ 2 any mass can be converted to energy. Can we convert energy to mass? Is still a question but scientists say it is doable. By some technology if mass can be converted to energy and transmitted and later converted to mass again we can transport (transmit will be a better word) matter at speed of light?

Are aliens using this technology to transmit matter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kumana Tank Renovation

  • Aug. 9th, 2006 at 6:06 PM
While I was in Moratuwa University, we decided to renovate a tank of a wildlife sactuary in Sri Lanka. Kumana which is a bird Sanctuary was our first choice.

Biggest problem was funding. Who will fund us to renovate a tank for wild animals. Thanks to Mobitel, SLT we were able to raise 2lacks of Sri lankan Rupees.

The five days we stayed in the middle of the jungle was a major experience. First day Rasika akka was attcked by a vicious scorpian. The first day at Kumana we spent most of the time claning up the camp site and getting ready for our major venture.

The rest I will tell you in my next blog.
